If you’ve ever stepped outside in a North Carolina summer, you already know, she’s not playing around. The humidity is real, the sun is bright, and your hair might have opinions of its own. But don’t worry, friend… your senior session can still be absolutely stunning (and actually fun!) even in the Carolina heat.

I’ve photographed plenty of seniors in peak summer weather, and I promise, with a little preparation, you’ll feel confident, comfortable, and camera-ready from start to finish.

Here’s exactly how to get ready for your senior session in the North Carolina heat.

1. Choose Outfits That Love You Back

This is not the time for heavy fabrics or anything that clings too tightly. Think:

  • Lightweight dresses that move in the breeze
  • Breathable fabrics like cotton or linen
  • Light colors or soft tones that reflect sunlight
  • Outfits you can actually breathe and sit in comfortably

And yes—bring options! A flowy dress + a more casual outfit always gives us variety without overheating you.

2. Keep Makeup Natural & Heat-Friendly

Humidity is real in the South, so soft, natural makeup tends to photograph best and hold up longer.

A few tips:

  • Lightweight foundation or tinted moisturizer
  • Waterproof mascara (trust me on this one)
  • Cream blush for a natural glow
  • Blotting sheets for quick touch-ups

The goal is to look like yourself, just a little extra glowy and camera ready.

 3. Plan Your Hair with the Weather in Mind

North Carolina heat can be unpredictable, so I always recommend styles that work with the weather, not against it:

  • Loose waves or curls that embrace a little texture
  • Braids or half-up styles for humidity control
  • Updos for those extra-hot summer evenings

And don’t stress if a few pieces fall out, that “soft, lived in” look actually photographs beautifully.

4. Stay Hydrated Before & During Your Session

This one is simple but so important. Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your session. Bring a water bottle with you—yes, even if you feel fine.

A hydrated senior = glowing skin, better energy, and a much more enjoyable experience.

5. Trust the Timing (Golden Hour is Your Best Friend)

I almost always schedule senior sessions during early morning hours or at golden hour, the hour before sunset. I do this because the light is softer and way more flattering.

Not only does it help with the heat, but it also gives you that dreamy, glowing, slightly Charleston-coastal feel that I love so much.

6. Come Ready to Have Fun (Seriously)

This might be the most important tip of all.

You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to “be photogenic.” You don’t need to stress about what to do with your hands.

I’ll guide you every step of the way, hype you up the whole time, and make sure it feels more like a fun hangout than a photoshoot. Your only job is to show up as you.
